BYU Creamery

Creamery on 9th
From a prior post, Utah Valley’s Daily Herald newspaper weighed in on their hamburger picks of Utah Valley. One of the burger makers with great reviews is BYU’s Creamery on 9th. I had not had the pleasure, so I decided to give it a try. As you can see, the creamery is part grocery store, part ice cream parlor and part diner. The line for the grill is the same line as the ice cream service. They only have one cash register for both. Because it was New Years Eve, evidently a number of staff were on holiday break, so they were a little short handed.
They have a nice diner type bar, although I thought the stools were uncomfortably close to the counter, so we opted for a table instead. We went with the cheeseburger combo which came with Fries and a drink. (They only serve decaffeinated soft drinks.) The Creamery actually offers Spicy, Pepper or Plain french fries. We tried the Pepper and Spicy, and they were both good. I think the spicy were better. A mild version of curly fries.
The hamburger is scooped onto the grill and flattened with spatula’s. It’s cooked fresh and not frozen. The hamburgers are served on a very fresh and soft homemade bun with condiments on the side. It may have been a function of being short staffed, but my hamburger was over-cooked. (To the point of crispy.) I’m sure it would have been much better with a little less time on the flat grill. The cheese appeared a bright yellow and tasted very good. The burger is served with slices of fresh purple onion, lettuce, pickles and tomato.

BYU Cheeseburger Combo
If you want mustard, ketchup or sauce for your burger you have to help yourself from the bulk dispensers.
I thought the overall experience was positive barring the overcooked hamburger patty, but we’ll chalk that up to human error, and give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a “rare” abnormality. BYU Creamery gets points for fresh, but I find it difficult to believe that it represents the best of Utah Valley.
We finished the trip with some very good ice cream. The Rocky Road was delicious, Lavell’s Vanilla (Named after BYU Football coach legend Lavell Edwards), Coconut Joy and Strawberry were absolutely extraordinary.
(I recommend dining on your dinner first and then getting back in the single line for an ice cream chaser.) You can find their website here: http://dining.byu.edu/creamery//
